LEARN THAI FOR BEGINNERS
Greetings are an important part of Thai social etiquette. The most common greeting is “Sawasdee” (สวัสดี), usually followed by the polite particle khrap (ครับ) for male speakers or kha (ค่ะ) for female speakers. A friendly smile and the traditional wai gesture may also accompany a greeting.

Thai speakers often add a polite particle at the end of a sentence. Men commonly use ครับ (khrap). Women commonly use ค่ะ (kha) for statements and คะ (kha?) for many questions. Adding these particles can make beginner Thai sound more polite and natural.

Corrections and useful notes
Sawatdi / SawasdeeBoth romanizations are commonly seen. “Sawasdee” is familiar to many learners, while romanization systems vary because Thai sounds do not map perfectly to English spelling.
Krub → Khrap“Krub” is common in informal learner materials, but “khrap” more clearly represents the Thai polite particle ครับ.
Where do you come from?The correct Thai is คุณมาจากไหน or คุณมาจากประเทศไหน, not คุณมาจากประเทศไทย, which means “You come from Thailand.”
Goodbyeลาก่อน (la gon) is correct but can sound formal or final. In everyday situations, Thai speakers often say แล้วเจอกัน (see you) or simply use สวัสดีครับ/ค่ะ when leaving.
ผม / ฉันผม (phom) is commonly used by male speakers. ฉัน (chan) is commonly used by female speakers in many casual situations, though Thai pronoun choice varies by relationship and context.
The waiThe wai is a respectful Thai gesture, but the appropriate height and whether to initiate it depend on age, status and situation. Visitors do not need to wai every person they meet.
