FAQ

Why is 20 “ยี่สิบ” instead of “สองสิบ”?

Thai uses the special form ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp) for twenty. For 30 and above, use the regular pattern: สามสิบ, สี่สิบ, ห้าสิบ, and so on.

Why does 21 use เอ็ด?

When 1 appears at the end of many compound numbers greater than ten, Thai commonly uses เอ็ด (èt), for example 21 = ยี่สิบเอ็ด and 31 = สามสิบเอ็ด.

Do I need to learn Thai numerals ๐–๙?

Arabic numerals are very common in Thailand, so beginners can communicate without mastering Thai numerals immediately. However, learning ๐–๙ is useful for signs, documents and reading practice.
